Premises Registration
Premises registration involves identifying locations where animals are raised, housed, shown or slaughtered. Individual pastures or barns do not need to be registered, just the address of the primary location (i.e., farm, fair or stable address). A Premises Identification Number (PIN) is provided for every registered location. Registration is simple, free and confidential, and can be done online, over the phone or by filling out a one-page form. >More about Premises Registration

Animal Identification
Many livestock animals are already identified by tags, tattoos, brands or electronic devices, but there is little standardization and many parts of the United States do not recognize identification from other regions. NAIS will provide a standard Animal Identification Number (AIN) that can be used with visual or electronic tags, or microchip implants. Different species and industries will require different identification approaches. Contact your local veterinarian if you need assistance with tagging or microchipping your animals. >More about Animal Identification

Tracing Animals
Once identified, animal movements through markets, feedlots, fairs, ports of entry or processing facilities will be recorded using the Animal Identification Number. If a diseased animal is discovered at any point in its travels where it might have come into contact with other animals (commingling), the Animal Trace Processing System (ATPS) will be able to report when and where contact occurred to state and federal animal health officials. The goal is to be able to trace the complete movement history of a diseased animal within 48 hours of discovery. >More about Tracing Animals
