Welcome to the Virginia Animal ID Portal!

On this site you will find information explaining how the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is being implemented in Virginia. NAIS is administered in Virginia by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of the State Veterinarian, with support from USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The Virginia Animal Identification Working Group provides input from livestock owners, market operators, Virginia Cooperative Extension, veterinary practitioners and many other sectors of animal agriculture in the Commonwealth.

NAIS is all about animal health. In order to effectively respond to animal disease outbreaks when they occur, animal health officials need to know where animals are housed and when many animals from different locations commingle and are potentially exposed. As in all emergencies, quick response means fewer impacts and faster time to recovery for production facilities, markets, events, farm communities - and your animals.

Please take a few minutes to Get the Facts on Animal ID in Virginia - and let us know your thoughts. We need your help to make animal agriculture in Virginia as safe and productive as it can be.
